Centro strategicamente importante, situato sulla linea Gustav, Sant’Elia Fiume Rapido, subì terribili bombardamenti durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Il suolo del Monte Cifalco venne scelto dai tedeschi come luogo di controllo e di posizioni difensive. Qui è infatti possibile vedere i fortini, aree ben protette lungo la sua cresta, con nidi di mitragliatrice, batterie di mortai, cannoni campali e altri armamenti. Saranno le truppe francesi del CEF, guidate dal generale Juin, a fare l’amara conoscenza di queste fortificazioni.

Strategically important and located along the Gustav Line, Sant’Elia Fiumerapido suffered devastating bombardments during the Second World War. The slopes of Monte Cifalco were chosen by German forces as a key area for surveillance and defensive positions. Even today, it is possible to see the fortifications: well-protected strongpoints along the ridge, equipped with machine-gun nests, mortar batteries, field guns, and other weaponry. It was the French troops of the CEF, led by General Juin, who would come face to face with these formidable defenses.
